Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you..." (Genesis 12:1 ESV)What must Abraham (then Abram) have felt when he got that call from God? Excitement? Nervousness? Fear? Apprehension?
To venture out from something you've known all your life into a strange place you've never been to (in fact you don't know where and what it is) is not an everyday thing.
Could Abram have been worried? Anxious? Afraid?
So Abram went, as the Lord had told him... (Genesis 12:4a)
If he had any questions, the Bible does not record them. If he had any doubts or worries or fears, it doesn't say any. What it does say is that he did as the Lord told him to.
I can relate a great deal with Abram here, being called to step out from a known place to venture into an unknown land. Recently, God has called me to step out of Messiah, the college I went to, the place where I worked for a while this year as part-time staff, the place that's been my home away from home for the past four—almost five, actually—years.
If Abram was feeling even just a little bit of anything like I'm feeling now, he'd probably be having to deal with emotions like nervousness and uncertainty. He'd be just a wee bit afraid of the future, yet, at the same time, he'd be feeling a little bit excited and adventurous.
And in spite of all those tumultuous feelings there would be that sens of trust and faith in God. Abram may not have known what lay in the future when He first heard God's call, but he placed all strength and hope in the One who called him out, and the One who knew exactly why and what was going to take place.
God has launched me on an Abramic Journey of my own. I don't have the slightest clue where I'm going next, or what I'm going to do next, but like Abram, I'm putting my trust and faith in God. He called me out to do His will, and I know He'll get me there.
